What Can We Say? …The Falcons Flew in & Beat Us 38 to 14.

There’s an old Louisiana saying. “The sun doesn’t shine on every dog’s butt every day.” The Atlanta Falcons came to Fed-Ex Stadium and completely dominated the game. They ran the ball and they stopped the run which is what the Redskins have been doing until this game.

OK, Injuries First:
Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said guard Brandon Scherff suffered a torn pec, and Guard Shawn Lauvao tore his ACL. Both starting guards are out for the season. Wide receiver Paul Richard is also out for the season. It appears the Redskins will have to sign offensive linemen quickly.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly:
There are quite a few reasons for the Redskins being embarrassed by the Falcons and losing by 24 points. Although the Redskins defense did sack the Falcons quarterback 3 times, they were unable to stop the Falcons running attack. Also, the Falcons had a 3rd down conversion rate of 76:92% which means the Redskins defense could not get the Falcons offense off the field very often.

Penalties were a big factor as the Redskins had 10 penalties for 147 yards. Penalties are drive killers. The Falcons won the time-of-possession battle 32:56 to 27:04. The Redskins defense allowed 154 yards rushing and 337 yards through the air for 491 total.

There were bad calls by the officials, but that is not why the Redskins lost the game. In my opinion, coach Jay Gruden forgot who this team is. He abandoned the run too soon while the game was still in reach. The score was 7 to 0 when Quinton Dunbar intercepted a pass from Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. After dropping a pass, Mo Harris had a good game with 10 catches for 124 yards. Punter Tress Way also punted well. Penalties, lack of running the ball, and dropped passes killed Redskins drives.

Right Now:
The Redskins are still in 1st place in the NFC East Division at 5 and 3 and are 2 and 0 in the Division. Other than studying the film to correct some mistakes, the Redskins have a serious offensive line problem now. Starting left tackle Trent Williams did not play and Ty Nsekhe started in his place. Williams had surgery on his hand and hopefully will be able to play in two or three weeks. Left and right guard positions are the main concern.

Down The Road:
Victories over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans will help get the Redskins and their fans past this embarrassing loss to the Falcons. Then they have to play all 3 Division rivals in a row. In my view, the season will determine on how well the new patchwork offensive line performs. If the offensive line can run-block and pass protect well, the Redskins will be successful.
