Colt McCoy – An Old School QB Backup You Can Believe In

When the 2016 regular season begins, our “backup” quarterback Colt McCoy will be celebrating his 30th birthday.  Being a University of Texas ex-student and fan, I have been a Colt McCoy fan for years. Hook’em HORNS.

When our Redskins and Colt McCoy agreed to a 3 year deal for 9 million, I was jubilant!  Let me explain why.  McCoy was the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns from 2006–2009 . During that time, he won the 2008 Walter Camp Award, was the 2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up and was a 2009 Heisman finalist. McCoy was named the 2008 AP Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. As a senior  he won 13 of the top 15 major college player awards including quarterback of the year, offensive player of the year, and outstanding football player of the year!  He took the Texas Longhorns to the BCS Title game but was injured and Alabama won the championship.

As he entered the 2010 NFL Draft, Colt McCoy was considered by many the 2nd best quarterback to Sam Bradford.  McCoy was a “duel threat” and he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns.  Next few years, Colt McCoy had to overcome adversity with injuries to his arm, ankle, and a concussion. He had to suffer learning new systems, new languages, and new offensive coordinators  every year as the coaches were replaced every year in Cleveland. Finally the ordeal ended as he signed with the Washington Redskins in 2014.  Was he bitter about his time in Cleveland? No, because to quote him, “I ALWAYS give GOD the glory.  I never question why things happen the way they do. GOD is in control of my life. And I know that if nothing else, I’m standing on the Rock,”

I could list many good things about Colt McCoy since he is active in much charity work, has done missionary work, active in his Church of Christ, and swam 300 yards to save a man having a seizure at a private lake. We Redskins fans have to feel proud that our quarterbacks are all of high caliber character and good men, husbands, and teammates. He got married in 2010.  He enjoys hunting and fishing and a pretty good golfer.  Colt is from a patriotic, Christian, decent Texas family.

Colt McCoy knows his role and prepares himself to play and win when the situation comes.  We all know backup players are one play away from being a starter. He is a highly competitive player, but likes being with our Redskins.  For the first time in his NFL career, he has had the same coaches and offensive coordinator year after year and he has the system, the playbook, the language down pat. He is ready in the wings.  In the meantime, he is the perfect mentor, teammate. He studies film like he was starting next week and scouts the opponent.  He takes notes and his experience helps our starting quarterback Kirk Cousins. “Hey, here’s their top coverages, here’s their top pressures.”  His input, experience, and help is both commendable and valuable. He is a fan of Kirk Cousins and one reason why Kirk Cousins got better and better in 2015.

He did not get to play in 2015 regular season games except the last game when Kirk Cousins left the game after a big lead vs the Dallas Cowboys.  He showed his “touch” on the ball and his arm strength as he fired a 71 yard touchdown pass to Rashad “ROCKET” Ross in the victory.

Colt is coachable and appreciates the time quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh spends with him to make him better as he did with Kirk Cousins.  So, my fellow Washington Redskins fans, you can feel better knowing we have a very good quarterback and a good person backing up Kirk Cousins.  We have all seen teams suffer when losing their starting quarterback and lose games.  We have a winner in Colt McCoy. Other teams were interesting in Colt McCoy before he chose to sign with our Redskins for 3 years.  He wanted to stay with us because he believes we will win a Super Bowl and is loyal to our coaches and team.  I have no doubt he could be a winning starter quarterback in the NFL, but chooses to stay with our team.
