From “You Like That?” to “Beast of the East” – The Journey

Kirk Cousins may have finally been chosen to be the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins last season, but the first half of 2015 came off as clumsy as a pig on ice skates. In game One the Skins managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory over Miami. After 5 more games the record stood at 2 wins and four losses.

Why the rough start? Two things stood out:

  • Kirk threw 8 interceptions in 6 games – but was that cause, or just the symptom?
  • Kirk didn’t get to practice at all with the first string before the start of the regular season – definitely not a symptom, and arguably the most likely cause of the 6 game “3 Stooges Marathon”.

In game 7 the Skins met the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had whupped the Saints at home in the Super Dome in week 3. When the Bucs went up 24-0 many Skins fans started to leave early – enough was enough they must have thought, “no more”.

Oddly enough, Kirk Cousins and the rest of the offense must have been thinking the same thing…

The braver Redskin fans who had stayed learned a valuable lesson that day: You can only whup a dog so long before it turns around and bites the crap out of you. And bite they did, first the offense and then the Skins defense. Over… And over… When the dust had settled the Redskins had scored 31 points to just 6 more by the Bucs, and the rest was “You like that?” history.

But what had really happened? Had Kirk Cousins carried the team on his back to an epic victory, or had the offense and defense carried Kirk?

The answer lay somewhere in the middle, but two things had definitely happened:

  • The leader of the Burgundy & Gold team had led the Redskins into history, and won an almost impossible victory.
  • Kirk had won not only the game, but also the trust and respect of the entire Redskins team, the coaching staff, and the Redskins Nation.
At any rate, “You like that?” became a battle cry for the last 8 games of the season, and our Redskins went 6 and 2 on the back end of the season.

  • Kirk finished the season with the highest completion percentage of ANY quarterback in the NFL.
  • During the last 8 games, Kirk threw for 19 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions.
  • Against all odds, the Redskins bitch-slapped the Eagles, Giants, the Dallas Cowboys, and won the NFC East title.
Kirk had won far more than just a game that day in Week 7, he had won what Coach Gruden couldn’t just give him.
